As part of our ongoing commitment to comply with our insurance company and keep our data safe, we will implement Google Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on July 1, 2023.

Our liability and cyber insurance company, MIIA, recently informed us of substantial changes to how our staff must access their Google email accounts. Beginning July 1, 2023, all staff email accounts will require MFA, sometimes called two-step authentication. This change is included in our upcoming insurance renewal.

MFA, or two-step authentication, requires users to provide additional verification factors to access resources such as our GDRSD Google accounts. This two-step verification process requires you to enter a code sent to your mobile device when you attempt to log in to your Google account. You’ll need this code in addition to your username and password.

Although this isn’t officially required until July 1, 2023, I recommend activating two-step authentication in the coming months, before that deadline. This feature takes about one minute to activate on a personal cell phone.

Please follow the directions outlined below:

  1. Log in to your GDRSD Google account.
  2. Visit the following link: https://myaccount.google.com/security
  3. Under the “Signing in to Google” section, click “2-Step Verification”.
  4. On the “2-Step Verification” page, click “Get Started.”
  5. Enter your phone number and click “Send Code”.
  6. Google will send a verification code to your phone. Enter the code and click “Verify”.
  7. You will now be prompted to set up a backup method when you can’t access your phone. You can choose text message or voice call.

Once you’ve set up your backup methods, you can log in to your account using Google MFA.

Timeline:

  • Email to Staff on MFA – February 8, 2023
  • With Technology & Digital Learning Team support, GDRSD Staff can activate two-factor authentication from February 8 through June 30, 2023
  • All GDRSD staff email accounts MFA enforcement July 1, 2023
